Japanther: Die machen alles selber!

Ja, ein Magisterarbeitsthema zu finden ist vielleicht keine einfache Sache. Aber ich hab’s mir einfach gemacht, und den Professoren meinen Vorschlag präsentiert – die fanden es super. Ich auch – schliesslich konnte ich so guten Gewissens und mit 400 Euro weniger in meiner Tasche nach New York fliegen. Nur zur Recherche selbstverständlich, dafür selbstausbeutend, aber mit 7 Interviews und einigen Erfahrungen mehr im Rückgepäck. Mein Thema? Alternative Projekte, Vernetzungen, Szenen in New York und (husthust) Leipzig. Alle lachen, New York-Leipzig. Das klingt unpassend. Ist es aber gar nicht. Denn wie langweilig ist eine Arbeit mit den gleichen Ergebnissen. Nein! Es war hochunterschiedlich. Auch wenn sich die alternativen Projekte, wie das ABC No Rio oder bestimmte Konzertorte in NYC und Leipzig ähneln, so ist das spannende daran ja, unter welchen Umständen sie wie und wo und mit wem entstanden sind. Und dort liegen die Unterschiede.

Die connections wurden vor der Reise geknüpft und so traf ich mich, mit einem Recorder ausgestattet, mit Japanther, Steve Englander vom ABC No Rio, Clayton Patterson, der die Lower East Side in einem Buch sozialhistorisch verewigt hat, Jeffrey von dem radical bookstore »Bluestockings«, Jason vom kunstpolitischen Projekt »the change you want to see« und einigen anderen. Zu dieser Reihe gehören aber auch Interviews mit Gorilla Biscuits, Sick of It All, sowie Email‑ Interviews mit Japanther und Parts and Labor, zwei Indie-Bands aus Brooklyn. Die Fragen kredenzten sich besonders um Themen wie stadtpolitische Veränderungen in NYC, die alternative/subkulturelle Musikszene und deren Verknüpfung mit politischen Themen und Veränderungen und Struktur unter alternativen Projekten. (Diese strukturieren sich in den USA anders und sind auch öffentlicher) Solch nette Reiseberichte und Interviews dürfen bei Beatpunk natürlich nicht fehlen, auch wenn mensch bei den Antworten manchmal schmunzeln muss. Im Folgenden sind zuerst die Email-Interviews zu genießen. Der Erfahrungs-und Hintergrundbericht wird später hinterhergeschoben. Erst mal die restlichen 60 Seiten aufs Papier zimmern….

Japanther ist eine Pop-Punk-wathever Band aus Brooklyn, die sei 2001 zehn Alben veröffentlicht hat, die gerne reist und über politische Themen musiziert. Das klingt jetzt erstmal nur wenig originell, doch ihre Auftritte sind ein Ereignis für sich. So arbeiteten Japanther bereits mit einem Wasserballet zusammen (Aquadoom), veranstalteten ein Konzert in Form einer Rock-Oper (Dinosaur Death Dance) und auch ihre sonstigen Konzertauftritte sind »totally deck« (wie der Williamsburger Hipster sagen würde). Im Folgenden nun ein kurzes Email-Interview mit Ian von Japanther über die Musikszene in NYC und anderes mehr.

Beatpunk Webzine (KC): As a Brooklyn-based band, how do you evaluate the alternative music scene in NYC contemporarily?
Ian: It gets high marks. There are a million outlets and millions of bands so it’s healthy and breathing by my estimates.

What changes, shifts or turning-points underwent the music scene in the past? (As far as you can remember.)
At a certain point Brooklyn got a lot of national attention but for the most part every few minutes everything changes again. Those »national« musicians are still walking around and are still humble nice people. Mean whilst new jacks walk around vibing out old timers, c’mon… Brutal noise bands go ambient end up on MAJORS and then get kicked right back off again. So change is constant and the influx of new people is such that the scenes are always reinventing themselves. Long story short, it’s a blast.

The idea that subculture is totally different from popular culture and has a revolutionary moment is still alive though the times of the subcultural peak is gone long ago. And even in its heyday »subculture« never was totally independent from the music industry at all. Subculture and all its spheres are phenomena of what Adorno and Horkheimer called the culture industry. So the phenomenon subculture diminished, but what’s still topical are the political (and left) ideas that made subculture seeming so »authentic«. Independent music and labels are often dedicated to those political ideas. In how far, would you say, are music and politics related, especially concerning Indie-music in NY/USA?
The personal is political and we tend to make very personal music. That said I take issue with the statements in paragraph above. A good Japanther show has several revolutionary moments. People inspiring people to move, think, laugh, jump and dance. Adorno and Porkpie didn’t live in the age I live in and don’t fully understand the new rules. As »projects« Tapes Records and Japanther are dedicated to travel, education and creativity. Profits don’t make the top three, therefore we are an alternative to any »industry«. That’s not to say we don’t sell shirts and records to get by, it just isn’t our main mission and we live simply.

In how far is Japanther influenced by DIY-ideas?
We outsource a great deal but enjoy the art/design process… We make our own shirts, albums, and seven inches. Book our own shows and even print our own stickers and buttons. I think we are just cheap control freaks in a sea of street sharks! JAWSOME.

What’s the »political« moment in your music?
Save Mother Earth, save the whales, share what you got, keep it simple, fuck the man… I don’t know rock and roll stuff! We go into trance and just channel the words.

You are travelling and performing a lot at very different locations in different countries. For sure you get an impression of the music scenes in that countries. Could you assess the circumstances/conditions for bands in the NY/US and elsewhere?
No never. Canada is amazing for us, Australia and Europe are really great for rock and roll too. We love LA and New York, Austin and Flagstaff… We love the Planet and want to visit her seven oceans!

Since the 90s squats, alternative house projects/concert halls, socio-cultural centers in the US have been split up or diminished. In New York there is the No Rio that I can think of. In Europe the number decreased since the 90s too, but there are still more socio-cultural centers and alternative spaces. How do you evaluate the process of gentrification as reason for a dissolving of an alternative scene?
NYC is bursting with alternative spaces. ABC No Rio is a long standing one, The Arm Letterpress, See Squat, Free 103.9, Casa Del Sol, Death By Audio, Silent Barn, Chicken Hut are just a selection of others. We all fly low… Gentrification is a fancy word for changes and changes are inevitable. Recently Tonic (a Lower East Side club) went under as a giant blue skyscraper went up around it. After 15\+ years that was sad but not surprising, the L.E.S. is dead but that won’t stop us from visiting its grave now and again.

What’s the deal with art and music in NYC?
Art and Music will never die in this city.

A message? Yeah! »Look past the apartments and over the train…« Look a little deeper than the internet and television. Travel, have fun, laugh, adventure and create friendships through creativity.

   Warum habt ihr hier eigentlich zehntausend Selbstlinks? Liegt das vielleicht daran das ihr eine Botschaft habt?

   Naja ich weiss nicht ob das die Korrekte Bezeichnung ist aber ein Selbstlink ist für mich ein Link auf die Eigenen Seiten. Was selbstverständlich völlig ok ist. Ich habe mir nur die Frage gestellt warum ihr z.B. die Zeichenkette »New York« Fünf mal auf den Selben Artikel verlinkt. Entweder das ist ein revolutionäres neues Taggingsystem oder ihr versucht da irgendwie was mit den Googlebots auszuhandeln. Ich hab allerdings auch davon keine Ahnung und desshalb tuts mir leid falls ich euch da was komisches unterstelle. Es war auch weniger ein Vorwurf, sondern eher ein Augenzwinkerndes Ich-weiss-bescheid-ihr-wisst-bescheid in richtung dieses Tricks.
   Zu blöd das niemand einen Weg gefunden hat so kleine Smileys oder sowas in den Text einzubauen, so könnte man leichter klarstellen das man nur spass macht und müsste nicht immer alles so umständlich erklären.
